What is a good brand of paint to buy?

I want to buy a member of my family some art supplies for her art class next year. I know NOTHING about paints or what to buy. Can someone please give me a few tips when buying paints? She paints/draws a lot on paper in a big scrap book type thing. My budget is roughly $40 - 50

Also, paints must be available in Australia! What is a good brand of paint to buy?
Your budget allows a set of Winsor %26amp; Newton's student-grade Winton oil paints from www.oxfordart.com.au

With these colors, the total is $48.65: Phthalo Blue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Viridian Hue, and Magenta.

You can also try Art Spectrum paints which are made in Australia.

Watercolors don't stink, so they're nice for painting indoors in classes. You will need acid-free watercolor paper (they can be sold in convenient bricks with sheets that can be cut off with a knife, at least one round brush that holds a point well (like real sable), a soft wash brush for covering large areas of the paper, a flat smooth acid-free board to put the paper on, a palette ring to hold the wet paints, and dry pan or tubed watercolors.

Good watercolor brands include: M Graham. Winsor %26amp; Newton. Holbein. Daniel Smith. Schmincke. Maimeri.

The downsides of watercolors is that they're difficult because mistakes are often impossible to remove from a painting. They also require framing under glass which can be expensive.

For oils... I suggest a palette knife for mixing paint, a soft round brush that can hold a point for detail work, a hog bristle bright, a painting knife that's shaped like an elongated diamond, a disposable wax paper palette sheet book, 12 x 16 stretched canvases, and so on.

A sketching book for graphite stick pressed charcoal drawing is a useful thing, too. What is a good brand of paint to buy?
That is a tough call. Not because it is a hard question but because you want us to guess what type of paint she uses. Usually scrapbookers paint with poster paint or acrylics. But also watercolor or oil paints could be used.

It may ruin the surprise but you better ask you family member what she uses or have someone else check what type it is. Also she may be brand specific so that would be a help in that department as well.

A set of good brushes is always welcome. A 'real' Chinese ink brush and other exotic brushes are among the gifts I got over the years and those really stuck in my mind as nice gifts. They inspire to try new things. And trying new things is tthe best gift for an artist. ;^)
