What is the difference in wall paint brands?

I was authorized to paint walls in our home but they use sherman williams, which is very expensive to do the entire house in. they gave me the paint colors and name. so i was wondering if i go get a sample card if i could take it to lowes and get berh which is cheaper paint. what is the difference between brands of paint and do you think the people will be able to tell. What is the difference in wall paint brands?
First of all, behr is exclusive to Home Depot. Lowes carries Valspar which is #2 or 3 in consumer reports. By the way, Behr placed #1 in consumer reports for 5 years running and past year, they place #1 in JD power associates in customer satisfaction. You are right though, Behr is cheaper than Sherwin Williams if you compare apples to apples. Behr carries premium line and Ultra Line which start at $17 for gal. of flat- enamel finish. The Ultra starts at about $34. The Ultra is self priming. FYI, Sherwin Williams did not place in top ten of consumer reports this past year. Now i think of it, they have not placed in the top ten for a while... As far as if one could tell brand difference by looking at it, it's possible if you go for a vibrant color. Cheaper paints use more clay and talc as a white base instead of titanium dioxide like in behr so the colors seem more muted or dull. Mostly you will know the difference when you are applying the paint as far as coverage and spread and couple years down the line after repeated scrubbings. Sorry for the long post but this is just scratching the surface. Hope it helps...What is the difference in wall paint brands?
It is certainly possible to get a sample card color matched at Lowes so that you could purchase the Behr paint; however, it will likely be just a touch off of the true SW paint color.

Personally, I believe that Sherwin Williams paints are better quality because they last for a long time and seem to hold up better [which is probably one of the reasons why they want you to purchase it there].

I think that they will be able to tell if you purchased a different paint because Behr and Sherwin Williams paints are different (whether you color match or not) and when they go to do touch-ups later on, the difference will most likely be noticeable. Paint is a finicky thing if the colors aren't precise...that's the only thing that would really cause problems.

Good Luck! :)
I have used both Sherwin Williams and Behr.

I think when you get into reds and other deep colors, it is best to spend the bucks with a more expensive paint. Otherwise I would suggest that you get a primer and have it tinted as close to the tan color as possible. Then you should only need one coat of paint.
Yes, you can give the paint name and number to most paint stores and they can look up the recipe in their computers. I would definitely suggest getting a no VOC paint so you do not pollute your indoor air. Good news, Lowes sells Olympic Premium paint that is no VOC and it is really cheap. Here is more info:

I reccomend Sherwin-Williams over Behr anyday-and Behr is more expensive btw-if you need paint matched I suggest a Glidden or even a Walmart Semi or Satin gloss-they go on relatively nice but any paint you use will need 2 coats to look professional-dont forget to prep!

Caulk, putty and clean before your application
first if it's a deep color you are going to pay a Premium don' ask me why but you will from what they tell me it's the raw material you can go to any paint store and they will match it up for you
