I live in southern Seattle, where moisture is a concern and it sometimes snows. My house has cedar siding in good condition and I will be stripping off the old paint. I don't mind the extra effort of oil-based if that would be better than latex. I just want something kick-*** and durable and water and mildew resistant so I don't have to worry so much when it's been raining for several days nonstop.
Is there a particular brand of paint (or, more specifically, a brand's particular line) that you would recommend? Oil or Latex?Recommended Exterior Paint Brand?
definitely an oil based enamel. perhaps weather-beater by sears, also behr makes a good paint....I would use an oil based paint thought, for the durabilityRecommended Exterior Paint Brand?
Wow, people can still buy oil based paint?
The last time I tried to buy any here in California, they didn't carry it anymore.
I've had good luck with Kelly-Moore lasting a long time. I'm not in the rainforest, but N. Calif. gets a fair amount of wet during winter. I think it has mildew inhibitor, but they sell it separately as an additive, if you want more protection.
Any quality paint would do, just avoid the cheaper grades.Valspar is excelent ,behr is good as well.As far as oil or latex it doesnt make a huge difference, although the older generation would swear by oil base, however,i would agree oil is much better for concrete and metals. when i painted my house 5 years ago I used behr latex and its still holding up.Exterior paints in general have a mildewicide already present in them , thats one element that makes them exterior grade. If you want somethign that will last along time ,stick with a lifetime graded paint verses the 20 year. And primer the house first, although its an extra step, you will have much better results such as coverage ,paint adherision ,sealing off the wood and it will look better and last longer than, if you didnt.Good luck.
Valspar exterior latex. It's the Dixieline house brand.
Oil seals better than latex oil prime and latex top coat. Oil tends to mildew worse than latex. zinzer makes a mold additive that supposed to work. prep is a very import key to the paint lasting a long time. especially outside. sherwinn williams makes some lifetime latex exterior thats very expensive called Duration. its one of the best.
Behr is a good brand and suppsosedly has anti mildew ';stuff'; mixed in with it.
If you use oil based you will have to always use oil based. If you use latex you could always paint over with oil based later.
I live in Florida, and although we are on different sides of the country we have 1 thing in common.....Rain. Moisture is a big concern here %26amp; there. I recently hired a very good painting contractor who transplanted here from upstate NY., and during our conversations I asked him ';hands down what's the best paint to use?';. His response was this. '; I ONLY use either Valspar paint (Lowes Brand), or Sherman Williams';. I ultamately chose Valspar latex, and couldn't be happier with the result. Hope this helps
